Most full size, new machines on the market today (and all the ones listed below) will have a interchagnable feet, stretch stitches, free arm, bobbin winder, and feed dogs that drop, so we'll ignore those features for now.For a beginner machine, I look for the following features:
- Easy to use-- ie, works when you turn it on.
- Drop in bobbin
- Automatic needle threader
Under $500Here's this from MAKE IT HOMEMADE:
"I sew on a Janome DC2012 and am absolutely in love with it. Although the DC2010 is no longer available the Janome DC2012
Under $200-This machine, a Brother CS6000i, is the best machine under $200. I hear this machine is the best for your buck on the market. It's a pretty good machine for beginners, and comes with a lot of cool stuff. Not as good as the above, but pretty great. Just a bit smaller and louder. If you are a beginner, this is pretty good. Great to use for a couple years or until you want an upgrade!
Under $100 If your budget is TIGHT, and you are checking out sewing for the first time, I would recommend seeing the Brother 2600i. This is the only machine this price that has a drop in bobbin and an automatic needle threader. I believe having these features will make your sewing much less frustrating.
Further Thoughts
There you have it! A few great sewing machines that won't break the bank!
Please realize that you can buy even better sewing machines at yard sales, thrift stores, online, etc. For cheaper. This decision may be best for you (And your budget!)
